I’m a creative who lacks experience, hasn’t received any major awards, and never worked on any global brands.
In my opinion, honesty is the defining characteristic of a great creative. It is the difference between an idea that falls flat and one that slaps you across the face.
I know, easy for me to say. But, don’t just take my word for it—take Bill Bernbach’s. As founder of the global ad agency DDB and one of the greatest creative directors of all time, he said, “The most powerful element in advertising is the truth.”
This was clear in DDB’s legendary “Think Small” campaign for Volkswagen. It was only by being completely upfront about the VW Beetle’s size, appearance, and performance that they turned what many thought were weaknesses into market-defining strengths. This campaign redefined the role of creativity in marketing forever: be clever, be subtle, be funny, and above all, be honest.
Great ideas don’t need awards, years of experience, or the blessing of a major brand. They need honesty. As someone still getting his feet wet, I’m banking on the truth to level the playing field.
